Tampa Bay area shoppers may notice something new in the beer aisle at their favorite grocery stores soon.

St. Petersburg-based 3 Daughters Brewing is preparing to launch a brand new brew in a limited edition can. “Code named Tango Yankee (military shorthand for TY or ‘Thank you’), the beer is an American wheat ale available in a limited edition can,” brewery officials explained in an media release.

The first can in the My Hero series, which is anticipated to launch each year in time for Veterans Day, honors Bruce Wells Harting. Harting is the grandfather to the three women who inspired the craft brewery’s name.

“Each annual Tango Yankee can (design) will reflect a unique story of bravery and heroism of a special veteran,” the brewer announced. Nominations for honorees, in fact, will be taken from the general public after this year’s inaugural roll out.

“This is one small way that we can honor the brave men and women who have served selflessly to defend our freedom,” said Mike Harting, CEO of 3 Daughters Brewing. “It’s our chance to say thank you to our military service members who sacrifice so much every day.”

Ret. Lt. Col. Harting earned a Purple Heart after being shot in combat on April 5, 1966, in Dak To, Vietnam. Harting was serving with the 3rd Platoon, C Company, 7th Calvary, 1st Calvary Division at the time. The drawing on the inaugural Tango Yankee can was inspired by a picture created by one of Harting’s students at Officer Candidate School years after he was shot in combat.

“Using only what they had – plywood from the dumpster, Army barracks green paint and pencils for drawing – one of the candidates sketched Bruce being helped off the battlefield by a medic,” the release explained. “It is a symbol of the courage and bravery our heroes display every day.”

Harting’s full biography can be read on the 3 Daughters Brewing website.

The first cans of Tango Yankee will be filled on Oct. 30 starting around 5 p.m. at the brewery, 222 22nd St. S. in St. Petersburg. Festivities will include live music and food. Navy SEAL veterans and this year’s My Hero honoree will also be present.

Starting on Nov. 9, 3 Daughters fans in Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota will find Tango Yankee available in select Winn-Dixie stores. Proceeds from sales benefit the SEAL foundation.
