BBQ Sauce crafted with craft beers

No barbecue is complete without a delicious BBQ sauce. Actually, can it even be a barbecue without that sweet brown stuff? We don’t want to know, and we won’t let you find out. BBQ sauces come in many different styles: ketchup-based, vinegar-based, sweet, spicy, loose, or thin you’ll find a BBQ sauce for any occasion. What happens when you add the perfect craft beer to the mix? What you get is something full of depth and flavor that sauces without craft beers couldn’t bring to the Memorial Day table.

This recipe is for a simple BBQ sauce that incorporates our Stern Line Oatmeal Stout. The dark craft beer lends itself beautifully with the sweet and sticky sauce. Use this to glaze your chicken and ribs or use it to top the perfect cheeseburger. The recipe makes a good amount sauce so you’ll have plenty to share or for yourself. Stern Line Stout BBQ Sauce

Yields: A lot

2 Tbsp Olive oil
1 cup Chopped onion
1 Tbsp Minced garlic
3 cups Ketchup
1 cup Stern Line Oatmeal Stout
½ cup Apple cider vinegar
¼ cup Dark brown sugar
¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
¼ cup Molasses
¼ cup Yellow mustard
½ tsp Old Bay
½ tsp Kosher salt
½ tsp Smoked paprika

1. Heat the olive oil in a pot over medium heat.
2. Add the onion and garlic and cook until the onions start to caramelize, stirring often.
3. Add the rest of the ingredients (including that delicious craft beer), turn up the heat and bring to a boil.
4. When it comes to a boil, turn down the heat and simmer until it thickens, about 5-6 minutes. Remove from heat and cool.
5. Put it all through a strainer to remove the onion and garlic pieces.
6. Label, date and store.
